The Left Side of the Brain

In our normal, waking state, the brain processes most of the information we receive on the left side. In most people, the right, or intuitive, side of the brain is less active at this time. The subconscious is not involved in this conscious activity. With hypnosis, the left and right sides of the brain, along with the subconscious, are encouraged and trained to work together.

We find that most of us are right–handed. It is generally accepted that, due to the body/brain crossover, most of us right–handed people tend to exercise the left brain. Also, in our Western world, the left brain qualities are generally considered more important assets. So, the term left brain would refer to the conscious, and the term right brain would refer to the subconscious.

It seems that the brain uses specialization to perform its everyday activities. The conscious mind, or left brain, would be associated with abstract reasoning, language, analytical thinking, mathematical concepts, and short–term memory. The chart below may help clarify some of the different qualities associated with the two sides of the brain, as interpreted from different theoretical concepts.
