COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

It is a misconception that a person who is hypnotized will tell their secrets. This is certainly not true! One maintains complete control of one’s faculties and doesn’t have to volunteer any more than they want to.

It’s not all that unusual for me to get a call asking if I’ll hypnotize their wife so that they can ask them if they have been "fooling around and cheating on them." I recall about 20 years ago a young woman insisted that I hypnotize her to prove to her husband that she had indeed been faithful. I explained that in actuality she could lie under hypnosis just as easily as any other time. It was a misconception that you have to tell the truth or tell all secrets! She still insisted "I have to do something to save my marriage!" I was thoroughly convinced she was telling the truth as she had actually believed the myth that honesty was a required state while in hypnosis. I finally told her I would do it for her in front of her husband. I let him ask all the questions he wanted. He seemed satisfied after and apologized to her for not trusting her. I talked to her afterwards and explained that this hadn’t really solved her problem. That if their was that much mistrust in their relationship it would show up again, and I advised her to seek some marriage counseling since I would not be available to her again.

Since that time I have simply explained to my distraught callers the truth and suggested counseling instead.

People also have fears that they won’t be able to awaken back out of hypnosis and might get stuck in a hypnotic state! First of all, as we have said, hypnosis is not a sleep or trance state. You remain completely awake and aware and in control. Remember the subject is the one who chooses how they wish to respond. Hypnosis is a very pleasant state and I have had one student who didn’t come out when I told him to. Since I know it’s up to them I simply said "I appreciate that this is a pleasant state and if you’d like to stay in your hypnosis you’re welcome to! However, there is a $50 charge for the next 30 minutes." Well, he instantly came right out!
