NLPThe "NLP" process is one that we use extensively. It can be an asset in a variety of situations and topics. Therefore, an explanation is in order for those who are unfamiliar with this technique. The term "NeuroLinguistic Programming" was developed from three sources: Neuro, our neurological system, which includes the mind as well as the five senses; Linguistic, our verbal language and our "body language"; Programming, which is defined as planning the details or arrangements of something. Therefore, NeuroLinguistic Programming is a technique that uses our mind and all five of our senses, as well as any other communication cues, to process information and to accomplish our goals. Now, when we talk about our five senses, we are referring specifically to:
By gaining an understanding of how we take in and process information we can understand how everyone else does the same thing. And, by understanding how everyone else processes information we can gain control over our planning of the details and arrangements of our lives! MODALITIESThe NLP term for our five senses is "Modalities" In the book "Frogs into Princes" by Bandler and Grinder, they described working with a woman who had a phobia of heights. Their office was on the third floor. They had her walk over and look out the window and describe to them what happened. The first time she went over she just choked. They continued asking her questions until they understood how she got to the point of choking and being upset. They found out what she would do was make a constructed picture (V) of herself falling out, then shed go to the kinesthetic and get the feeling (K) of falling and then feel nauseous (K). She would go Visual & Kinesthetic & Kinesthetic (V-K-K). It happened so fast naturally that she wasnt aware consciously about her inner process. They then asked her to walk over to the window while she sang the national anthem inside her head. When she did this she did not experience the phobic feeling. They switched the representational system (modalities). Anything that changes the pattern or sequence of events a person goes through internally changes the final response. Once you understand what the steps are, you can reverse the order in which the steps occur, you can change the content, you can insert some new piece or delete a step. Questions to ask yourself:What was it like the last time I had a problem with_________? (fill in the blank). Or, ask yourself "what would happen if it was to happen right now?" (Either of these questions can help you connect with your unconscious responses). How do you know you are scared, depressed or guilty? Its important to understand that not everybody thinks like you do. There is great variety in the ways in which people think. One approach is not necessarily better than another in general but, depending on the way you experience things, can have an affect on you. How do you know? This process not only teaches you how to listen to yourself, but how to listen to other people better as well. VERBAL PACING (PACING WITH PREDICATES)The predicates an individual uses to describe their experience will indicate the way in which they perceive and make sense of that experience.
Would you like to change your own experiences when youre not happy with them? Or further enhance your enjoyment when your life isnt going well? Submodalities (an NLP term attributed to Bandler and Grinder) are descriptions of how we experience what we are saying and thinking, and have been defined as a precise description of a persons internal thinking. These descriptions are guideposts that allow you to change how you experience life in a useful way when you understand the simple theory behind them. They are the more detailed aspects of the NLP techniques we discussed in Session Onevisual, auditory, kinesthetic, gustatory and olfactory. These would entail for instance: color, brightness, size, distance, location and focus. Examples:
