RIGHT BRAIN

The subconscious records everything we’ve ever
heard, seen, thought or imagined

We use the term subconscious rather than the unconscious as is so often used in psychology because we believe the subconscious is never unconscious.

Most of us are right–handed. We understand that due to the body/brain crossover most of us right–handed people tend to exercise the left brain. Also, in our Western World, the left brain qualities are generally considered more important assets, which we don’t necessarily agree with. So the term left brain would refer to the conscious and the term right brain is used to describe the subconscious. As an aside, we find that our left–handed students tend to be more ambidextrous, or, as we might say, more whole–brained.

A research project found that it was possible for a left–handed person to write one sentence with their right hand and at the same time write a completely different sentence with the left hand–both at the same time! Once again another example which shows us our minds are capable of much more than we often give ourselves credit for.

Specialization

It seems the brain uses specialization to perform its everyday activities. The conscious mind or left brain would be associated with abstract reasoning, language, analytical thinking, mathematical concepts and short–term memory. The right brain or subconscious is more attuned to our creative capabilities. Art, drama and music fit in this category as well.

Carl Gustaf Jung, the protégé of Freud, stated that we all have a male and female side. Chinese medicine speaks of this in the understanding of Electric and Magnetic, Yang and Yin, Hot and Cold. While the left brain is very logical, the right brain is very intuitive. As is shown in Chinese medicine, there is a balance to the way the brain works. However, most of us use the left brain consciously much more than the right brain.

We do not normally contact the right brain in the same way as the left. Hypnosis is a technique to get in touch with the right brain in a focused, goal–setting manner.

LONG TERM MEMORY

The subconscious is our long term memory capability. It has often been likened to a computer in its amazing capacity to recall everything we have ever seen, heard, thought or imagined, if we put any attention to it when we were exposed to the situation.

MIND/BODY COOPERATION

The subconscious is the part of the mind that controls both the voluntary and involuntary muscles of the body–we don't have to tell our heart when to beat or our lungs when to breathe. That is why we can affect our body in wondrous ways with self–hypnosis, such as pain control, raising or lowering our blood pressure, and even assist in healing ourselves as well. Since hypnosis deals directly with the subconscious it is a worthy tool to assist in these kinds of goals.

Belief is also important in physical health. Most medical treatments work better if the patient (and doctor) believe in them. Often inert chemicals (placebos) will work just as effectively as drugs and antibiotics–providing that is, the patient is convinced of their efficacy.

BODY LANGUAGE

The buzzwords for this are, "The issue is in the tissue."
