SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF HUNA
Hawaiian Huna has much in common with hypnosis, meditation, and other philosophies that utilize the power of the conscious/subconscious mind to effect change. As with all of the techniques and philosophies that we bring to this site, it has been affected by our point of view. So I now apologize to our honorable friend, mentor and teacher, Serge Kahili King, Ph.D., for any irritating liberties that may have been taken with his work. We are not trying to represent his profound work, but simply to discuss some of the Huna concepts that we have found to work, examples of situations in which these techniques were used along with their results , and develop an interest in you, our visitor, for the Way of the Adventurer! Power AnimalsKulike is a Hawaiian word that means "to take on the characteristics or pattern of another." This is the ability to mimic, just as the chameleon purposely changes its colors to mimic its surroundings. It is the method that infants use to learn to talk, walk, and relate. A power animal might be described as a source of energizing power in animal form. A power animal represents our own inner potentials, talents, abilities and strengths. The purpose of each individual power animal is to bring an understanding of its attributes and aspects in our selves, clothed in the images of animals. It allows us, through the process of projection, an understanding of what still needs to be developed, tamed, or trained. When one identifies with a power animal its desired qualities are allowed to be used as inner resources to provide added choices and responses to our everyday lives. When we identify with the wolf, we connect with experience, power, and understanding. The fox may get you in touch with quickness and cleverness. The dog teaches loyalty and courage. If you are feeling aimless you may wish to evoke the beaver for a sense of purpose. Every animal, whether it runs, crawl, swims or flies, has a purpose. When you begin to study and meditate upon the different animals, dont be surprised that a particular animal keeps showing upOn a sign, in your dreams, etc. Remember that there are no coincidences. Often we are attracted to the more dramatic or romantic animals, like the eagle or the jaguarbut dont forget to access the resources of the ant or the butterfly. The theory that we are after all one world, united intimately with all other things that make us up is not a new one! That would include all animals, all of Earths creatures, the wind, sea, plant life, etc. All that we are is not separate. Ecology is finally teaching Western man something that Aboriginal and Indian tribes have known all along. That we cannot survive separately but are all one system which either dies together or thrives together. May our work allow all to benefit. The Seven Sacred Principles of Huna represent a philosophy, a way of looking at the world. For additional information on Huna, contact Serge King at www.sergeking.com. A power animal might be described as a source of energizing power in animal form, with intelligent motion. The purpose of each individual power animal is to bring an understanding of its attributes and aspects in our selves, clothed in the images of animals. It allows us, through the process of projection, an understanding of what still needs to be developed, tamed, or trained. When one identifies with a power animal its desired qualities can be used as inner resources to provide added choices and responses to our everyday lives. In our discussion of the power animals and sacred objects of the various tribes, I would like to affirm to my Indian and Hawaiian friends that I do not in any way wish to oversimplify their ritual magic. I understand there may be more going on than my metaphorical explanations. But, for the purpose of this book I wish to state the understanding that comes to me from 30+ years as a clinical hypnotist. This is based on the belief that music, ritual, art, dance, chant, allegory, myth and even fairy tales are potent symbols that speak to that part of our human mind which is emotional, intuitive, and reactionary. I believe this is one of the processes which makes the magic work. So indeed it is fair to say I am oversimplifying for the purpose of making my literary point. As a hypnotist I understand that we Westerners do well having a left brain understanding of such things. Even Jung said that the real archetypes are beyond comprehension or knowing in literal ways. They speak to that inner part of us that knows, often without being muddled up with theory and as cause and effect. For Every Creature Is A Thought In The Mind Of The Great Spirits. |
